School dropout -Kayanza: Iprosarude sounds the alarm in Muhanga

School dropouts in Kayanza province, especially in the commune of Muhanga, are taking a worrying turn.

According to the survey conducted by Iprosarude (Initiative for the Promotion of Rural Health and Development, in collaboration with the provincial directorate of education, the toll continues to rise. “The school dropout rate has been increasing from day to day since the beginning of the school year 2020-2021”. Worries  the advisors at the provincial directorate of education in kayanza.

In the basic schools, there are more than 2057 students who have dropped out of school and more than 57 cases of dropouts in the post-basic cycle, says an official of the Ministry of Education in the commune of Muhanga.

Thus, Iprosarude’s field agents, as part of the joint –program Menyumenyeshe, have conducted investigations to discover the root causes of this school wastage.

At the end of this investigation, the dropout rate was largely due to poverty in the households. Students prefer to drop out of school to look for work in the cities. In addition, unwanted pregnancies among female students are reported. In less than a month, 25 girls in basic school and 69 in post-basic school had unwanted pregnancies that caused them to drop out of school.

Or worse still, most often they go to Tanzania or Rwanda to earn some money by doing odd jobs, while others get hired at mining sites or large operations.

As part of addressing this problem of school dropouts, Iprosarude organized a mass sensitization in Kayanza, in the commune of Muhanga, Tuesday, November 17, 2020. Iprosarude were mobilized  education officials in the province, the governor of Kayanza province, directors, health officials, school principals, parents and students..

The awareness messages were focused on the importance of education and the fight against pregnancy in schools.

Parents were encouraged to follow closely the education of their children and to ensure that they really went to school,   inviting them to collaborate with the directors and teachers in the schools; and to take measures together to fight even against pregnancies in the school environment.

For the advisor to the governor of Kayanza, poverty should not be an obstacle to the schooling of any Burundian child. A solution is within the reach of the directors. ” The school authorities must  collaborate with the administrative entities and together we will find a solution. We thank Iprosarude because, this organization closely follows our children in schools and especially thanks to its joint- program Menyumenyeshe, our teenagers learn a lot about sexual and reproductive health.

It is reported that this awareness activity organized by Iprosarude was enhanced by the senior advisor to the governor of Kayanza province, the public prosecutor in Kayanza, the provincial doctor, the advisor to the provincial directorate of education, the communal administrator of Muhanga and his advisors, the provincial coordinator of FENADEB, the directors of the eight involved in the Menyumenyeshe project, representatives of religious denominations, the police commissioner’s envoy in the province, the heads of zones and hill heads, journalists and model parents.
