SRH: Radio sensitization of youth in Gitega on Sexual and Reproductive Health

Some young people in Burundi are victims of juvenile delinquency and unfortunately some of them engage in sexual activities to fill their time.

It is because of this state of affairs, which has a negative impact on the future of these young people, that IPROSARUDE is developing several strategies to raise awareness on a large scale among young people, as well as among parents, about sexual and reproductive health.

In order to reach more youth, Iprosarude uses community radio stations. Youth volunteers have been trained, and now they are sensitizing other youth so that they too can acquire good information on sexual and reproductive health as well as exchange with their peers on responsible sexuality.

Radio programs for the populations of Gitega and the eastern provinces of Burundi are regularly organized on Humuriza FM, a community radio station that is the most listened to in Gitega and the surrounding area by young people.

For Dr. Joseph Bigirimana, Legal Representative of IPROSARUDE, one can only engage in development if young people are involved, well-informed and built. “The potential of adolescents and young people can only be fulfilled if they are protected from early pregnancies, HIV and AIDS, child marriage, and female genital mutilation. A wind of awakening and awareness of hope is blowing in our country. Young people have taken the train and their destiny in hand for the promotion of healthy behaviors and harmful scourges through communication campaigns and awareness at the community level and the use of social networks, “he said. In his opinion, these community radio initiatives contribute to the promotion of adolescent and youth health. “Adolescence is one of the transformative phases of the human being, marked by rapid changes.  He added.

The rapid physical, cognitive, emotional and sexual development during adolescence requires the attention of youth development partners. It is necessary to provide young people with the necessary means for their development for society,” said Dr. Joseph.

The young volunteers sounded the alarm on Humuriza FM radio about the danger of unwanted pregnancies in schools and the importance of having accurate information on sexual and reproductive health. They invited other young people to visit the youth-friendly health centers set up by IPROSARUDE as part of the joint program it has implemented in partnership with Care International in Burundi.
